About Parallels Desktop for Upgrading to Windows 7 Parallels Desktop for Upgrading to Windows 7 enables you to perform the upgrade from Windows XP or Windows Vista to Windows 7: Note: In this document only Windows XP is mentioned, however, all the information is also relevant to Windows Vista . If you have a Windows XP-based computer, Parallels Desktop for Upgrading to Windows 7 will help you to smoothly upgrade it to Windows 7 without losing your files and programs. If you have both Windows XP- and Windows 7-based computers, Parallels Desktop for Upgrading to Windows 7 will help you to transfer all the files and programs from the computer running Windows XP to the computer running Windows 7. ---------------------------------------------------------------- 2. System Requirements Upgrading Windows XP to Windows 7 To upgrade your Windows XP computer to Windows 7, the Windows XP computer should meet the following system requirements: Minimum 1 GHz x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) Intel-compatible CPU (processor). Minimum 1 GB of memory (RAM). 2 GB RAM or more is recommended. 25 GB are required for the upgrade. Transferring Windows XP to Windows 7 To transfer your files and programs from the computer running Windows XP to another computer running Windows 7, the Windows 7 and Windows XP computers should meet the following system requirements: Windows 7-based computer: Minimum 1 GHz x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) Intel-compatible CPU (processor). Minimum 1 GB of memory (RAM). 2 GB RAM or more is recommended. The amount of free disk space required to host the Windows XP data after the transfer is twice the occupied size of the Windows XP computer's hard disk(s). For example, if the occupied size of the Windows XP computer's hard disk(s) is 30 GB (the disk(s) can be of any size but only 30 GB are occupied), you will need 60 GB of free disk space on the Windows 7 computer's system disk (the disk where Windows 7 is installed). DVD-ROM drive. Ethernet network adapter for transferring over network. USB port for transferring via the Parallels USB cable. Windows XP-based computer: 700 (or higher) MHz x86 or x64 processor (Intel-compatible). 256 MB of memory (RAM) or more. Note: If you have less than 1 GB RAM on the Windows XP-based computer, Parallels Desktop for Upgrading to Windows 7 may run very slowly. 1.5 GB of hard disk space for installing the Parallels Upgrade Agent package. If you are going to transfer the Windows XP based computer using an external storage device, you should have a NTFS formatted storage device large enough to store the Windows XP data. For example, if the occupied size of the Windows XP computer's disk(s) is 30 GB, there should be 30 GB of free disk space on the external storage device. Known Issues - You may need to reactivate your Windows XP license in Parallels Desktop after the upgrade procedure is finished. - You may need to reactivate some programs after they migrate to Windows 7. - You may need to enter credentials in some programs once again after they are moved to Windows 7. Make sure you know the necessary passwords before the upgrade procedure. - You may need to repair or reinstall some programs to get them to work properly after they migrate to Windows 7. - If you are going to upgrade your Windows XP-based computer to Windows 7, make sure the system disk of your computer is NTFS formatted. - If you are going to transfer Windows XP files and programs to Windows 7 using an external storage device, make sure this device is NTFS formatted. - If you leave your antivirus software enabled when working with Parallels Desktop for Upgrading to Windows 7, it may significantly slow down your computer. - If you have any encrypted files or folders on the computer, you should back up your encryption certificate to make sure that you will have access to the encrypted data after the upgrade procedure. - If Windows XP network settings are configured in custom mode, they may not be moved to Windows 7. - Printer settings will not be moved to Windows 7. - If you have a large amount of data on your Windows XP computer, it may take you a significant amount of time (several hours) to upgrade Windows XP to Windows 7. ---------------------------------------------------------------- 4.
